Pickens County students took home top honors in the 2013 Glider Challenge held April 25 at Lockheed Martin at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center.
The R.C. Edwards Middle School team, “The UFOs,” won first place in the 2013 Glider Challenge. Team members were Clary Miles, Robert Weir, Khalil Anderson and John Robert.
The “Chicken Strips” team from the J.T. Simpson Alternative Center came in second place. Team members were Chase Simmons and Austin Elrod.
More than 60 eighth-graders students from Pickens and Anderson counties competed in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) event.
In the Glider Challenge, students explore the relationship between force and motion and the effects of weight and lift on the glider. Teams competed in several categories, including distance, accuracy and artistic design.
