LIBERTY — U.S. Waffle Company announced on Thursday plans to launch a new frozen food processing facility in Pickens County. The company’s $22.1 million investment is projected to create approximately 114 new jobs, according to the S.C. Department of Commerce.
“We’re excited for our new Pickens County facility to come online, as it will allow our team to continue providing high-quality products to our customers,” said Chief Executive Officer John Symons. “We’d like to thank our local and state partners for their continued support, and we look forward to joining the Pickens County business community.”
Founded in 2013 by industry-experienced food production experts, U.S. Waffle Company, Inc. is a privately-held organization currently headquartered in Greenville, S.C. The company manufactures many national brands and private-label products for worldwide distribution.
“South Carolina has always been known for great food, and our thriving food processing and distribution industries are an extension of that,” said S.C. Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt. “Today, we celebrate the U.S. Waffle Company and their new Pickens County location, which further fuels the growth of the food distribution industry in the Palmetto State.”
U.S. Waffle Company will be relocating existing operations and adding new production lines by moving into an existing, 310,000-square-foot facility at the intersection of Highway 123 and Highway 178 in Liberty.
The move marks the largest largest economic announcement since 2005.
“The U.S. Waffle Company’s vision for providing customers with the absolute finest quality waffles and pancakes can be seen first-hand by the passion and enthusiasm of the people who work there,” Pickens County Council Chairman Roy Costner said. “This obsession for excellence makes for a perfect partnership with the folks who call Pickens County home. We are proud to welcome them to the Pickens County family and look forward to celebrations of their continued success!”
This new facility will be producing frozen pancakes and waffles for a variety of retailers and restaurants. Including the 114 new jobs, there will be approximately 350 total employees at the Liberty facility.
The new plant is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2019, and those interested in joining the U.S. Waffle Company team should visit www.uswaffle.com, a company spokesperson said.
The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits related to this project. A $200,000 Set Aside grant was also awarded to Pickens County to assist with costs associated with the project.
Gov. Henry McMaster weighed in on the announcement as well saying “Across South Carolina, businesses of all types are thriving, and today’s announcement by the U.S. Waffle Company is a testament to that. We’re excited for the 114 new jobs in Pickens County and look forward to watching this company thrive for years to come.”
